Making it easier on your bike

Cycle to work

Riding to work is a great way to start the working day. Here is why, and some points on how to get started.

Answers to frequent objectionss

  • The road is too busy
    When cycling, you'll use quiet backstreets and cycle paths, rather then the busy main streets.
  • I'm not fit enough
    Give it a try a few times. It may be easier then you think.
  • It may rain
    Yes, but statistically, it doesn't rain often. Take a light raincoat just in case.

What you need

  • A bike - make sure it is safe;
  • A bike helmet;
  • Lights for after dark;
  • Backpack or pannier bags for your briefcase;
  • Good lock;
  • Pump and puncture kit;
  • Rain jacket.

How to get started

  • Find a cycle route to work - get a map and look for quiet backstreets. Or get a free cycle map;

  • Try it on - ride to work on a weekend;

  • If you are unsure about cycling, go on a few social rides first;

  • Ask the office manager where you can park your bike.

  • If you get all hot and sweaty during the ride, ask the office manager where you can have a shower and change into work clothes.

  • Be sensible and safe - Be courteous to other road users. Be clearly visible, especially at night. Stick to the traffic rules. Look and indicate before changing direction.

If you need more facilities at work

If there is no place to park your bike, or if there are no showers...

  • Your employer may be willing to provide those facilities...

    • Fitter, healthier employees have been shown to be more productive;
    • People cycing to work do not get delayed in traffic jams;
    • Bike spaces are much cheaper then car spaces - you can fit 10 bikes in one car space;
    • Showers are useful not just for cyclists, but for lunch time joggers too.

  • First get a group of co-workers together who want to commute by bicycle too, so your employer knows it is worth their time and effort.
